Gunsmoke blues - Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, George...

A year later, she was headlining shows at the Apollo Theatre, where she first became known as 'Big Mama' (Thornton stood 6 feet tall and weighed over 300 pounds). In 1953, she would release the biggest hit of her career.

  

During a production hiatus of the popular TV Show "Gunsmoke", the film crew
decided to take off and film a barnstorming blues revue making it’s way
across the country and they ended up in Eugene, OR with cameras rolling
to film Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner and George
"Harmonica" Smith as they performed in a music hall. Date: October 20,
1971.
