Self-taught as a carver, his design sources were diverse, including indigenous woodcarving seen while on tour in the South Pacific in World War II. A former chaplain and minister, he also drew inspiration from Bach and Mozart, Eastern European ecclesiastical structures and other devotional works.
From his first exhibition in 1952 at Contemporary Crafts Gallery (now Oregon Ceramic Studio), he left his mark through prominent commissions found around the state: Salishan Lodge, St. James Evangelical Church in Portland and the Lake Oswego City Hall, just to name a few.
