This quote is often used to describe attempts to manage alcohol abuse with willpower alone. The use of alcohol is out of control and one drink becomes too many while a thousand drinks is not enough for the alcoholic.
It is best for them to accept they are hopeless at managing alcohol use and to avoid the substance completely. Instead most alcoholics continue to drink with disastrous results. Insanity is not admitting that they are not in control, to admit defeat and to quit drinking alcohol altogether.
Abstinence has proven to be the most effective treatment to recover a life lost to alcohol.
