The Honolulu-born musician died in his sleep at home in Westminster, California just one month short of what would have been his 104th birthday.
He was still playing his ukulele in performance when he reached the grand age of 100; and he was still touring in 2010. He died six months after releasing a live album of his 100th birthday celebration.
His musical career spanned more than 90 years, and as the obituary on his official website states: "He was the last living link to the earliest days of both jazz and the ukulele as a popular instrument".
As well as performing, Tapia became a teacher to Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable, Betty Grable, Jimmy Durante, Buster Crabbe and Shirley Temple.
After the Second World War, Tapia moved to San Francisco and worked for years as a guitar teacher until making a comeback in 2004, age of 96, with the release of a CD, Tropical Swing, featuring jazz and Hawaiian standards. He followed his success with Tropical Swing with Duke of Uke(2005) and Livin' It Live (2009).
