The whooping cranes, part of
North America's tallest flying bird species, have been in pens since
last month and are now being led by Operation Migration with two ultralight aircraft on a
journey through Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia to
reach a wintering habitat at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in the
Gulf Coast.
A new wild flock of Whooping cranes is being reintroduced to the eastern United States, where whoopers had not flown for over a century. In Fall 2013, Operation Migration are leading this year's new chicks from Wisconsin to Florida.
